This weeks tip is on recovery. Last weekend I injured my back while surfing my raceboard. I was having a really fun session with some friends, not really thinking about training or racing, just enjoying myself, and the next thing I know, everything hurts. Well, that’s life.
To make a positive situation out of what could otherwise be a complete downer, I’ve decided to share with you some of my tips on injury recovery and prevention.
I am not a fan of western medicine. I avoid doctors offices and pharmaceutical medications as much as possible. Instead I use alternative, holistic, and home health care practices to help get me back out there ASAP. The most important thing to do is of course the hardest, and that is to REST. Besides doing my best to lay low, which I am terrible at, here are some other ways in which I help my body heal.
Instead of pain meds, I use @the_good_inside hemp oil, essential oils, and arnica (homeopathic) both orally and topically to reduce pain swelling, inflammation, and bruising. Hemp and Essentials oils can also be used to relax the mind and reduce stress and anxiety onset from being “laid up.” To relax damaged muscle tissue, I use soft massage balls on targeted areas to perform self-myofascial release. (Self massage) I also use a TENS pad, pictured here, which works using electrical impulses. You can have this done at the chiropractor, but I bought my own for home and travel.
If I need outside assistance I visit an acupuncturist who offers injection therapy as a homeopathic alternative to cortisone.
Some of my preventative practices include daily stretching, epsom salt baths, more self massage, a healthy DIET, plenty of WATER, and lots of SLEEP. (Those last 3 tho!!! 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻)
Once I’m ready to get back out there, I find ways to train which do not aggravate an injured area. Like biking instead of paddling. Then I use @kttape to help ease the pain of freshly injured areas.
If you’re curious for more information, I’ve written a full length blog that will be posting on the @pdlmnstr app next week for all basic and all access members. If you’re curious about paddlemonster, or have any questions, send me a dm. 💙
