Antonio Cavilla, Portret Hamido Laâmbre, 1885, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam
.
🇬🇧In the eighties of the nineteenth century, photography was still a new medium. The people photographed at the time have a peculiar facial expression - they do not smile, they look at the lens in concentration, they do not correct the facial expressions. It is as if they were not aware that someone is watching them or rather how they will see them. They simply are. This photo was taken in Morocco in 1885, when Hamido was 20 years old. We know little more about him than what Julio Cervera Baviera, Spanish military who was stationed in Morocco, wrote in his diary. He described the youngster as "a loyal, intelligent, young man who spoke some English" and took part in his mission. We can add that he was probably the lowest-paid employee, if not a slave. His person was immortalized for us by Antonio Cavilla, a photographer born in Gibraltar, who lived and worked in Tangier. Many studies of North Africans have been preserved by him, although we know about them mostly only this what photography itself gives us.

Autor: Mariano Fortuny Marsal (1838-1874).
Localización: Museo del Prado, Madrid.

☆ Tom Wesselmann, Desnudo nº1 ☆
Óleo sobre lienzo
63,5x114,5 cm

(Madrid)

So, what’s the connection between this image and religious iconography? I’ll give you a clue - the necklaces and one of the earrings are made from lapis lazuli (the other earrings are kyanite, with dumortierite, sodalite and freshwater pearl making up the rest of the necklaces). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Back in the Medieval times, paints were made by grinding up natural pigments and mixing them with oil, water or other liquids. Colours like ochre and pink came from readily available clays, but other colours were harder to obtain. Hardest of all - and therefore most expensive - was the deep blue colour called Ultramarine which was made from grinding up lapis lazuli.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because ultramarine was so expensive it was saved for the most important people in the images, for example angels or saints, but above all the Virgin Mary. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a result, after seeing centuries of paintings with the Virgin wearing a blue cloak, we automatically think of her wearing blue, but there’s no biblical reason for it, just the practical expense of using lapis lazuli as a pigment.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So that’s lapis lazuli and iconography. How lapis lazuli is helping feminism smash the patriarchal conspiracy I’ll leave for another day!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Topkapı Sarayı Giriş Kapısı (Bab-ü's Selam)🇹🇷
*Topkapi Palace Entrance Door

A male police officer measures the skirts of two women on the beach, 1920s
•
This photo represents the rebellious attitude from women in the 1920s. This time period marked the rise of flappers and women claiming independence and developing feminist attitudes. The women in this photograph were both wearing very revealing bathing suits for the time period in a beach of only men. They were smirking and seemed to be enjoying the attention.

Kitap genel olarak söyleşilerle dolu ve üç bölümden (Leyla’dan Geçme Faslı, Yaşama Ödevi, Kalpten Kalbe Bir Yol) oluşuyor ki her bölüm ayrı lezzetli. #kemalsayar 'ın en çok sevdiğim yanı, kendisinin; şehir insanının gönül yorgunluklarını, ruhların gizli yaralarını ilaçlardan önce kelimelerin sağaltacağına inanan bir psikiyatrist olması. She is our official #wcw and we commend her as well as El Otro Lado, her place of retreat. A splendid soul.

Repost: @womenfromhistory ~ The Aztec goddess of agriculture and her festival, Chicomecóatl ~

Chicomecóatl (“Seven Snakes”) also called Xilonen (“Young Maize-Ear Doll”), is an Aztec goddess of sustenance and, hence, of corn (maize), one of the most ancient and important goddesses in the Valley of Mexico. The number seven in her name is associated with luck and generative power. .

She was often portrayed as the consort of the corn god, Centéotl. Chicomecóatl is depicted in Aztec documents with her body and face painted red, wearing a distinctive rectangular headdress or pleated fan of red paper. She is similarly represented in sculpture, often holding a double ear of corn in each hand.

Hueytecuihutli (from June 22 to July 11) was a festival destinated to Chicomelcóatl, with a sacrifice of a woman, by decapitation and with the extraction of her heart. It's also the name of the eighth month of the Aztec calendar.

~ Sacrifices in ancient China ~ .

The ancient Chinese are known to have buried slaves alive with their owners upon death as part of a funeral service. This was especially prevalent during the Shang and Zhou Dynasties.

In China sacrifice, like other aspects of religion, has existed at a number of different levels. The essential feature of imperial worship in ancient China was the elaborate sacrifices offered by the emperor himself to heaven and earth. There are also records of sacrifice, including human sacrifice, associated with the death of a ruler. But, because the common people were excluded from participation in imperial sacrifices, they had lesser gods—some universal, some local—to whom sacrifices were made. Furthermore, ancestor worship has been the most universal form of religion throughout China’s long history; it was the responsibility of the head of a household to see to it that sacrificial offerings to the dead were renewed constantly. The blending of these elements with such established religions as Buddhism and Daoism influenced the great diversification of sacrificial rites in China.

The sacrifice of a high-ranking male's slaves, concubines or servants upon his death was a more common form. The stated purpose was to provide companionship for the dead in the afterlife. In earlier times, the victims were either killed or buried alive, while later they were usually forced to commit suicide.

Funeral human sacrifice was widely practiced especially in the ancient Chinese state of Qin. According to the Records of the Grand Historian by Han Dynasty historian Sima Qian, the practice was started there by Duke Wu, the tenth ruler of Qin, who had 66 people buried with him in 678 BCE.

Marcus Larson - Burning Steamer (c. 1858) - Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, Sweden
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Painted by the Swedish Romantic artist Simeon Marcus Larson (1825-1864).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Thanks to his fate – the man from a simple background who became famous but died young, burnt out and destitute – he embodies the Romantic conception of the artistic genius. His works were sold for mind-boggling sums but his lifestyle was self-destructive. He was unable to hold on to his substantial earnings and ended his days in poverty in London at the age of only 39. Marcus Larson had no equal in making the most innocent forest glade seem ominous. In his landscapes, he stages a battle between chaos and order that is highly relevant in our time." Alfred Sisley
‘The English Coast, Penarth’
Oil on Canvas
1897
_
Although Sisley's works are quite beautiful to the modern eye, it is important to remember that his work (like that of all of the Impressionists) was quite radical in its own day. His focus on modern, urban life, his view of nature as a worthwhile subject matter, and his sketchy, "impressionistic" style were all hallmarks of a new painting style for an industrialized world.

Best known as a painter, before his death at the age of thirty-five, Amedeo Modigliani also created impressive sculptures and drawings. However, the legend of his troubled life and early demise - and the subsequent suicide of his young fiancée, Jeanne Hébuterne - has tended to overshadow his significant artistic achievement.
