Why Marques de Pombal has a lion on his statue?
Marques de Pombal was a Portuguese Prime Minister from 1750 to 1577.
He became known because of his brave and determined attitude after the 1755 dramatic earthquake in Lisbon (9 from Ritcher scale). He stood up immediately and told: "And now? Now the deads are buried and the lives are treated".
In one year the city was rebuilt again!
The lion represents that determined, brave, courageous, strong and noble attitude!
But it is not the one reason.
Francisco dos Santos, the sculptor of the statue, was one of the "Portugal Sporting Club" founders and first players. [This is a Portuguese football team whose main sign is a lion!] So as a tribute to his own football team, he sculpts a lion close to Marques de Pombal! 🦁 😂😂😂
