🇦🇺Do you know the difference between a Wallaby and a Kangaroo? Ever see a Tasmanian Devil up close? What the heck is an Echidna? I had the opportunity to visit a Koala Sanctuary near Brisbane, Australia on my recent adventures and came away with a much better appreciation of the wildlife that is unique to Australia:
Page 1, clockwise starting in the top/left. 1. Ok, not the genuine article, but certainly this kind of poo is something you won’t find in a North American or European zoo. 2. Those two fellas are wallabies, which generally are smaller than their kangaroo cousins. See page two for a comparison. 3. Pretty obviously a koala, these guys spend most of their time eating eucalyptus leaves and sleeping. Apparently they need more sleep that most animals because eucalyptus leaves contain toxins that take large amount of energy to digest. 4. Yes, that’s a Tasmanian devil. He may seem cute, but I’m told he can be quite vicious. 5. Did you know that penguins are common in southern Australia? This variety, not surprisingly, are called ‘Little Penguins’, and are the smallest of the world’s penguin species.
Page 2, clockwise starting in the top/left. 1. Now that’s a Kangaroo. Do you see how much taller and heavier he is than a Wallaby? 2. The Blue-winged Kookaburra is the smaller, shyer relative of the well-know Laughing Kookaburra. Their favourite food is snakes that they kill by bashing them against a tree or rock. Yikes! 3. You likely recognize this as a common Emu. This one followed me around like I was his BFF! 4. Not sure what this lizard is, but he crawled out of the bush in front of me to make sure I got his picture too. 5. This odd-looking fellow, a short-beaked Echidna, has got to be a relative of the North American porcupine. An anteater, apparently it can flick its slender tongue out of its mouth up to 100 times every minute. Sounds like a kid I went to school with.
